Which microlocs technique is right for me?

One of the beautiful aspects of microlocs is the variety of installation methods available. Certain techniques can save you time or money, while others provide more volume from the start. Some methods are particularly well-suited for specific hair types. This allows you to customise your journey according to your unique preferences.

Here are the main techniques:

1. Twist Method

  • Technique: Two-strand twists are used to form the microlocs established with braids at the root.
  • Suitability: Ideal for tightly coiled and kinky hair types (type 4 hair). The twists hold well and can mature into locs over time. It gives a fuller look from the onset.

2. Braid Method

  • Technique: Tiny braids are created to form the microlocs.
  • Suitability: Suitable for all hair types, including those with fine thin hair as braids provide a strong foundation and reduces the chances of unravelling.

3. Interlocking

  • Technique: A tool is used to weave the hair strands into the root in a series of rotations.
  • Suitability: Works well for all hair types but is particularly beneficial for those with looser curl patterns (type 3 hair) as it prevents slippage and unraveling. It’s also good for people who sweat a lot or have an active lifestyle and will wash their hair more often.

4. Comb Coils

  • Technique: A fine-tooth comb is used to twist small sections of hair into coils.
  • Suitability: Best for tightly coiled hair (Type 4 hair). This method is great for men and for starting locs on very short hair.

5. Instant Locs / Faux Locs

  • Technique: Using extensions, a crochet hook is used to attach the locs.
  • Suitability: Suitable for all hair types. This method is ideal for those who want fully formed locs immediately rather than waiting for the hair to grow over time. The false hair can later be cut off as the natural hair grows out.

Each method offers unique benefits, so the choice depends on your hair type, desired look, and maintenance preferences. You can book a consultation with me to help determine the best method for your specific hair needs as well as the relevant costs.
